Nick Marcangelo

Nick has a background in social work starting in the 1970's in London. He trained in Bristol and subsequently was awarded an MSc in Social Services Management from Lancaster University in 1991. His experience spans working with all ages including children and their families, young adults leaving care and older people; he has worked with the voluntary and independent sectors as well as mainstream social services and the NHS. His more recent work with the National Change Agent team at the Department of Health supported the implementation of the delayed discharge arrangements across Heath and Social Care. He also contributed extensively to the development of the first national NHS Continuing Care Framework and was a leader of the Partnerships for Older People Projects run by the Department of Health.

Nick has substantial expertise in managing social care service budgets and recognises the ever- present tension between resources and demand. Whilst working for Cumbria Social Services, he worked very closely with NHS, third sector and independent providers as a Partnership Manager; this started a long- standing interest in 'whole systems' and developing effective integrated services to promote individual independence for people using the various services. Since 2010, he has worked as an  independent health & social care consultant. His assignments have included: supporting the development of Health and Wellbeing Boards in the north of England; an analysis of Continuing Care eligibility for the Welsh Assembly Government; and facilitating a number of Local Authorities in the LGA-funded implementation of the DWP 'Healthy Ageing' Programme.

Nick has particular skills in facilitating workshops where there is a need to create a safe environment for exploring tensions and finding solutions to difficult problems. He has worked with a wide range of inter professional teams to develop new ways of running their services, assisting them to recognise their strengths and the opportunities they have to enhance practice.

Nick is married with two sons and has lived in north Cumbria for 30 years. His interests include sailing, rugby, walking, jazz and cooking, but not simultaneously! His most recent joy is in looking after his new granddaughter.
